Start at least 8 weeks before moving day. Key tasks at the 8-week mark include booking your removal company (popular dates get booked up fast), notifying your employer, and starting to declutter. Leaving things to the last 2 weeks causes the most stress.
Book your removal company as early as possible — especially if moving on a Friday or at month-end. Good removal companies book up 6–8 weeks in advance for peak dates. Everything else can flex; your removal date is fixed.
Two weeks out: confirm your removal company booking, start packing non-essential items, begin change of address notifications (bank, DVLA, GP, employer), arrange parking at both addresses for moving day, and confirm your completion date with your solicitor.
On moving day: do a final walkthrough before leaving, take meter readings at both properties, keep important documents and valuables with you rather than in the van, and have the kettle and cups accessible for the removal crew. Tip the crew if they do a great job.
Pack a moving day box last — the things you will need first. This should include: kettle, mugs, tea/coffee, toilet paper, phone charger, a change of clothes, basic tools (screwdriver for reassembling furniture), and any medications.
